Paul
Von Hoff is trombonist and artistic programmer for the Gaudete Brass.
As artistic programmer, Paul prepares new editions of early music
for the quintet and coordinates the planning of upcoming concert
programs. He has prepared for this role by performing in brass quintets
since the age of 15 in such diverse venues as churches of many denominations
and the San Antonio Riverwalk. Paul has also performed with a number
of orchestral and chamber groups, including the Nashville Symphony
Orchestra, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica
de la UANL (Monterrey, Mexico), the Acanthus Chamber Orchestra,
and the Tennessee Jazz Orchestra. He also served as the trombone
instructor at the W.O Smith Nashville Community Music School. Paul
has studied with Frank Crisafulli, Lawrence Borden, Mark Lawrence,
Jay Friedman, Michael Mulcahy, and Dean McCarty. He holds a Bachelors
degree cum laude from the Northwestern University School of Music
and a Masters Degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts.
When Paul is not on the road with the quintet, he enjoys spending
time at home in Evanston with his wife Carrie, his son Christopher
Daniel, and their 2 cats, Clio and Thalia. He is an expert contract
bridge player. He enjoys California Red Zinfandel wine and Scotch
from the Speyside region. When he doesn’t have to be out driving
in the sometimes nasty Chicago weather, he enjoys reading. His favorite
authors are J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, and R.C. Sproul.
